Why 2-Minute Sessions Work

2026-02-14

When you're working, studying, or scrolling for a long time, your brain doesn't run out of power - but it does get tired of the same task. Attention drifts, mistakes creep in, and everything feels heavier. A short session doing something different can reset that.

Why two minutes? Long enough to step away from what you're doing or change gears, but short enough that you don't lose your place or feel guilty. You're not "wasting" an hour; you're giving yourself a brief pause. In that window, a quick game or a stretch or a walk to the kitchen can shift your state. When you come back (or move on to something else), the same problem often feels a bit easier.

What to do in those two minutes? Something that uses a different part of your brain or body. Staring at another screen might not help as much as moving, but if you're already at a screen, a very short game can work: it asks for attention, timing, or pattern-spotting instead of the kind of thinking you were just doing. The idea isn't to get good at the game - it's to interrupt the loop you were in or give yourself a small, self-contained challenge.

Why games? They give you a clear start and end. "One round" or "two minutes" is a natural boundary. You're not opening a bottomless feed or a long article; you're doing one small thing, then deciding what to do next. That makes it easier to use games as deliberate pauses or as a string of small challenges.

When to take a short session? When you notice you're rereading the same line, making small errors, or feeling restless. You can use a timer (e.g. every 25 or 45 minutes) or simply pause when you feel stuck. The point is to notice when a change of pace would help and then take it without overthinking it.

We built Do Not Disturb Me with this in mind: a 2-minute challenge you can play in your browser, no sign-up, no commitment. When the round ends, you've had a small reset. You can close the tab and go back to what you were doing, or queue up another round (or two, or ten) if you're having fun. Either way, you've given yourself a short, contained session.
